Art is something that has always been close to my heart; God has blessed me with an ability that I do not want to let go to waste. Like many, I first started drawing as a young child and what started out as a way to keep me quite during church services has turned into a lifelong hobby and passion.
Growing up I loved playing sports, all kinds. From early on my sports heroes were Ryne Sandberg, George Brett, and Wally Joyner, Derrick Thomas, Neil Smith and later on Tony Gonzalez; my love of these players led me to my interest in drawing sports figures. I first recall sitting at the kitchen table drawing George Brett and Whitey Herzog from their 1987 Topps Baseball Card when I was 6 years old. When I wasn’t drawing sports figures I found myself also drawn to comic books. Artists such as Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, and Rob Liefeld were strong influences in my drawing as I got older.
Throughout high school I took as many art classes as I could and continued my art education at Texas Tech University where I majored in Visual Studies with an Emphasis in Drawing. While attending Texas Tech I played football for 2 years before being overcome by two shoulder injuries. My dream of playing in the NFL never came true; however, I was fortunate enough to play three year of indoor football for the Fairbanks Grizzlies and the Austin Turfcats in the Indoor Football League. Knowing that I couldn’t play football forever, I decided to retire from my football career to become an art teacher and coach. It wasn’t until I started teaching that it resurrected my love for creating my own artwork.
In my artwork my choice of medium is graphite, sharpie, pen and ink, or markers. I do not create art for others to find a deep meaning within; I create art to bring joy to others and myself. The only goal I strive for in my work is that it makes a connection to one’s favorite athlete, actor, or childhood hero, and puts a smile on their face.
